The History and Early Uses of Cannabis
Cannabis has been valued for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. Its use can be traced back to 2800 BC, when it was included in the pharmacopoeia of Emperor Shen Nung, a key figure in early Chinese medicine.
Origins and Early Uses
Cannabis first appeared in central Asia, specifically in western China. Its healing benefits were recognized as far back as 2800 BC. Emperor Shen Nung, regarded as a pioneer in Chinese medicine, documented its uses in his pharmacopeia. Ancient texts from various cultures, including Indian Hindus, Assyrians, Greeks, and Romans, also highlight cannabis’s role in treating a wide range of health issues such as arthritis, depression, inflammation, pain, appetite loss, and asthma.
