Cannabis Strains and Their Purposes Leave a comment

There are various categories of cannabis, commonly known as weed or marijuana. Marijuana encompasses the dried seeds, stems, leaves, or flowers of the Cannabis plant. The specific classification of weed is determined by how the plant is processed and the particular type of Cannabis plant it originates from.

All types of Weed originate from the Cannabis Plant, yet distinct species produce various effects on individuals

The primary active compound in weed is Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC. THC possesses psychoactive properties, which means it can change one’s mood, alertness, awareness, and cognitive abilities. Another significant component found in weed plants is Cannabidiol, or CBD, which induces relaxation without the psychoactive effects associated with THC. CBD is also believed to have pain-relieving properties.

What varieties of cannabis are available? There are two primary categories of cannabis, distinguished by the specific species of the Cannabis plant from which they originate (Sativa and Indica). While weed originally originated from these two strains, there are now hundreds of hybrid strains that blend elements from both.

Cannabis comes in two main types: Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa, each with distinct effects on individuals. Recently, Cannabis ruderalis has also been used for medicinal purposes due to its lower THC levels. Hybrid strains combining features of the two primary species have also emerged.

Individuals using marijuana typically choose a type based on their desired effects, which can vary from person to person. The method of consumption, such as smoking or ingestion, can also influence the cannabis experience. While everyone’s experience is unique, there are general effects associated with each strain:

Indica and Sativa: Indepth View

Indica

Cannabis indica comes from the cold, mountainous Hindu “Kush” region near Afghanistan, which gives it a shorter, bushier appearance with darker, fuller, and rounder leaves that form clustered buds.

C. indica is famous for its high THC and low CBD levels, making it a potent strain. It’s well-known for its relaxing and sedating effects, often making people want to unwind on the couch. It’s typically used in the evening or before bedtime because it produces a soothing “body high.”

Indica is a popular choice for those with insomnia due to its calming effects. A recent study found that more people experienced relief from insomnia and pain when using indica compared to sativa, possibly because of its higher THC levels.

Sativa

Cannabis sativa originates from warmer climates like Mexico and South Africa, and it typically grows tall with long, slender leaves. This plant requires more than 11 hours of darkness daily to start flowering.

C. sativa contains lower levels of THC compared to indica but has higher levels of CBD, resulting in a more balanced chemical composition. Sativa strains are known for their invigorating effects, and people often consume them in the morning or afternoon. Some individuals claim that sativa helps them focus and enhances their creativity. C. sativa is associated with a cognitive or “head high” rather than the body high experienced with indica.

Thanks to its mood-lifting and energizing properties, sativa is often chosen by individuals dealing with depression or fatigue. Some users have also reported relief from symptoms of ADHD and other mood disorders when using sativa.

Hybrid

Hybrid strains are created by crossbreeding the seeds of the two common Cannabis strains in an effort to combine their effects. Nowadays, most cultivated strains are hybrids rather than pure indica or sativa varieties.

These hybrids are typically categorized based on their predominant effects. For instance, a sativa-dominant hybrid is more likely to deliver energizing effects and a cerebral high.

Ruderalis

Cannabis ruderalis, another species, was initially found in southern Russia. It tends to be shorter than the other two weed species and features slender, fibrous stems with large leaves. What sets it apart is that it’s an auto flowering plant, meaning it flowers based on the plant’s age rather than relying on light conditions.

C. ruderalis contains very low levels of THC compared to other cannabis strains, making it seldom used for recreational purposes. Instead, it finds more frequent application in medicinal marijuana.

Cannabis for Pain Relief

First, How does Cannabis Aid in Chronic Pain?

Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are natural compounds found in cannabis. When consumed, they interact with specific receptors in the body called CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors, mainly in the brain and nervous system, control the psychoactive effects of cannabis, while CB2 receptors, abundant in the immune system, play a role in regulating the immune system and inflammation.

CBD can reduce chronic inflammation and pain. It also affects opioid receptors, which are essential for pain regulation. CBD binds to opioid receptors and changes how they respond to stimuli, leading to pain reduction.

THC, the primary compound in cannabis responsible for its intoxicating effects, interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the brain, reducing the perception of pain.

Cannabis contains various terpenes, such as Beta-caryophyllene, Eucalyptol, Limonene, Linalool, Myrcene, and Pinene, which may help alleviate chronic pain by relieving stress, anxiety, and inflammation.
